Kedarkantha Trek-Overview

Kedarkantha Trek is the fun winter trek in Uttarakhand. The peak is standing at a height of 3800 meters/12,500 feet above sea level. The peak is located in the Western Garhwal of Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The trek comes under the Govind Ballabh Pant National Park is a reserved area for many Himalayan species. Although most of the Himalayan treks are inaccessible during the winter, Kedarkantha is the exception in this case as it becomes more exciting and enthusiastic in winter due to snowfall. This winter trek showcases sights of snow-capped Himalayan ranges, lush landscapes, frozen streams, and many more things. How to reach Kedarkantha Trek

To reach Kedarkantha one first needs to reach the Sankri village which is about 200 km from Dehradun.

By Air

The nearest airhead is the Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun which is well-connected with New Delhi and other big cities as well. From there one can take a cab to reach Sankri village which takes around 10 hours long journey.

By Train

The nearest railway station is the Dehradun Railway Station which has good connectivity with major cities of the country like Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata.

By Road

Road is the best way to reach any hill station and Dehradun is no exception as it is accessible through major Indian cities. One can take AC Volvo bus or other buses and also cab services are available towards the village.

 

Kedarkantha Trek-detailed schedule

Day-1: Dehradun Railway Station to Sankri village

Upon arrival at Dehradun Railway Station, start the journey towards the village of Sankri village which is a long way journey of 10 hours. This long journey takes one through the magnificent places like Mussoorie, Kemptyfall, Yamunapul, Nainbag, Nagaum, Purala, Mori and Natvar. One can also get the view of the Holy River Yamuna and Tauns river.

Day-2: Sankri village to Juda Ka Talab

After having breakfast, start the trek from the Base Camp of Sankri to Juda Ka Talab. Walking through some Himalayan villages the trek passes through the beautiful dense forest. After a long hours of walk, reach the Juda Ka Talab which is the base camp for the second day.

Day-3: Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Camp

The third day journey begins from Juda Ka Talab towards the Kedarkantha Base Camp. The Camp is nestled at an altitude of 11,250 feet and the distance of 4 km from Jadu Ka Talab. The trail starts after having breakfast and passes through the dense forest of pine and oak and also many Shepherd huts. Before reaching the base one can get to see the stupendous views of snow-capped mountains of Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kala Nag and Ranglana. After reaching the camp, stay overnight in the tent.

Day-4: Kedarkantha Base Camp to Kedarkantha summit

The fourth day is the day for which every trekker dreams, the trek is from the Base Camp of Kedarkantha to the summit of Kedarkantha. Trekkers need to walk at a height from 11,250 feet to 12,500 feet. The day starts by enjoying a mesmerizing sunrise. There are several ways to reach the summit but it is better to opt for the main route. Through this route one can find few oak forests and a stress free journey. One can admire the summit by passing through this way, but towards the end one may find the trek difficult especially for the beginners.

Day-5: Trekking down to Sankri

On the fifth day start heading down towards the Base Camp of Sankri village from where the journey began. It takes roughly around four hours to reach the base. For the rest of the day one can explore other places in Sankri village.

Day-6: Sankri village to Dehradun

After having breakfast, start the return journey towards Dehradun. Where the whole trip ends.

Covid-19 protocols:

  • Trekkers must carry musk and face shield every time while hiking.
  • Trekkers must carry a bottle of sanitizer with them.
  • Covid tests before travel are recommended but not mandatory as in high mountains medical facilities are nil.
  • Trekkers must carry their personal equipment as exchanging sleeping bags and tents are not recommended.
  • Medical kits including the oxygen cylinder, pulse oximeter need to be carried.
  • Physical distancing needs to be maintained every time.
